1.5.4 The Priuli fountain

When the Ottomans cut off the supply of the Morosini and afterwards the Bembo aqueduct, the city of Candia once more faced the threat of thirst. In 1666 the Proveditore Generale Antonio Priuli decided to collect the water of the wells around the Mezzaluna Moceniga, the fortress outside the moat near the site called actually “Kommeno Bedeni” and to drive it through a duct to a new fountain, which he constructed near the Gate of Dermatas (by the sea-front enceinte). The fountain, which has been preserved, has a Renaissance-style facade, with a pediment laying on four columns of the corinthian order.
