The fountain which the Governor Fr. Morosini constructed in 1628 was the final act of his huge project to deal once and for all with the lack of fresh water in the city through the construction of an aqueduct, which could transport the water from the springs of the Mount Giouchtas. The eight lobes of the fountain’s tank bear sculpted decoration from the maritime life (nymphs, tritons, dolphins, hippocampi and sea-demons). Over the water basin, which was supported by four lions, stood the oversize statue of Poseidon, the notorious Gigante, stepping on a dolphin. The decoration was executed by the sculptor Thomas Benetos or Frabenetos of Rethymnon and his brothers. In 1847 the Ottomans covered the fountain with a marble superstructure, bearing the inscription “Fountain of Abdülmecit” in order to transform it into a kiosk of public benefit (sebil). After the liberation of Crete in 1900 the superstructure was demolished and the fountain was restored, but the statue of Poseidon on the dolphin had already disappeared.
