The impressively large church of San Salvatore of the Augustans (Eremitani or Centuroni), which was situated outside the old defensive enceinte, in the modern Kornarou Square, doesn’t exist anymore. The building, which was turned by the Ottomans into a mosque of the Devletlu İsmetlu Turhan Hatice Valide Sultan (Valide Camii) and from the year 1926 hosted the High School for girls, was set under state protection in 1947; but in 1973, though it was still almost intact, it was demolished by order of the dictatorship, in order to create an open space in front of the modern multistory blocks of flats which were constructed wright to the South, despite the scandal and the furious reactions of the locals.
