Of the three subsequent buildings which hosted
the seat of the Latin Archdiocese in Candia, all of them dedicated to the
founder of the Cretan Church Apostle Titus, none is preserved. The original
building was founded probably during the Middle Byzantine period and was used
by the Venetians with a few alterations. It was rebuilt in 1446 and again in
1550. After the fall of Candia to the Ottomans it was turned into a mosque
dedicated to Fazil Ahmet Paşa Köprülü (Vizier Çamii). Ruined and abandoned by
1834, the modified Venetian building was demolished and in its place a new
mosque was constructed in 1871, according to the eclectic design of the
architect Athanassios Moussis, and took the name Yeni Vizier Çamii. For the
construction many debris of the earthquake of 1856 were used. In 1925 the
building was altered in order to function as an Orthodox church, dedicated to
St. Titus.
