1.4.5 Santa Maria di Piazza (Madonina)

The Virgin of the Piazza or of the “foros” (tax) or Virgin of the Market or Santa Maria dei Miracoli or Madonina was in the Market Square, on the external side of the Voltone Gate, between the modern streets 1821 and Argyraki. According to the Venetian sources the Virgin was honored in both rituals (latin and orthodox). During the Ottoman period it was turned into a mosque of the Chief Secretary Hüseyin Efenti Acemzade ( mosque of the Market or Arasta Camii). After the liberation of the island it was turned into a sheltered market called Arastas. It was demolished in 1961 for the construction of a hotel. During the demolition procedure it was revealed that inside the built-up Venetian piers there were incrusted marble columns. One of them commemorated the byzantine commander of Crete of the early 11th c. Eumathios (it is exhibited now in the Historic Museum of Crete). In all probability, the Venetian church had incorporated the ruins of a byzantine church already dedicated to Virgin Mary.
