The small
church of St. Menas is situated to the West of the church of St. Catherine and
to the NW of the Metropolis. In his present form it’s a double-aisled
barrel-vaulted church. The southern aisle is dedicated to the Presentation to
the Temple and the northern to St. Menas. On the engraving of Maneas Klontzas
(1628-1645) and the map of R. Werdmüller (1668) at the site is depicted a
single-aisle church dedicated to the Virgin Pantanassa, which was first
mentioned on documents in 1548. In the catalogue of the churches of the late Venetian
period which was preserved by F. Cornelius the church occurs for the first time
under a double dedication (Virgin Pantanassa and St. Menas).
The northern
aisle of the actual double-aisle church can indeed be attributed to the
Venetian period, according to the existence of a pointed vault with buttressing
arches, a gothic-style window on the northern wall and the remains of the
relief base of the belfry on the western edge of the northern facade. The
southern aisle was added probably during the restoration of 1735, when the
church was proclaimed as bishopric seat. At that point the southern
window-frame of the original aisle, decorated with a coat of arm with a lion
between relief vine scrolls, was transferred on the southern wall of the new
aisle to be preserved.
