1.4.6 The Monastery of St. Peter of the Dominicans

The church of St. Peter the Martyr is today the only surviving part of the monastery of the Dominican brotherhood, which was founded before 1228 on the NW edge of the old enceinte, near the Jewish Quarter.

The monument in its present form is a result of an extant restoration that took place from 2007 to 2009, after a long period of time when the monument was roofless. The excavation campaign and structural analysis helped the clarification of the buildings complex constructional history. In its original form the building was T-shaped, equipped with a transept, which was abolished after the earthquake of 1303/4. The small two-storey chapels that flanked the sanctuary were flanked in their turn by two larger ones, of which only the southern, with remains of 15th c. wall-paintings, is original (the northern was recently reconstructed). The eastern of the groin vaults that covered the sanctuary was replaced by a barrel-vault during the Ottoman period and the original grouped-type triple-light eastern window, still traceable on the masonry, was replaced by an oculus at the same period. The three chapels along the southern wall of the nave were added subsequently, from the 14th to the 15th c. The rectangular pediment on the NW side is what remains from the minaret that took the place of the original belfry when the church was turned into a mosque dedicated to the Sultan Ibrahim in 1671. Today the church belongs to the

Parish of St. Demetrius.
