The Venetian occupation of Candia was followed by the establishment of a new order in the islands ecclesiastical affairs. The Church of Rome had decided to impose its predominance on the island right from the start, through the foundation of a Latin Archdiocese in Candia. In the same time, the monastic orders, which, from the middle of the 13^th c. promoted the role of the Latin Church, begun to found in Candia new buildings to host their activities. As time went by these structures were developed into impressive complexes. Only few traces of these early Venetian buildings have survived, mainly because of the earthquakes and the constant reconstructions.
