The Virgin of the Angels was probably the most important Orthodox church in Candia and acted as the seat of the orthodox arch-priest. It was situated to the SW of the gate Voltone. The building was constructed before 1320 and was restored before 1410. In 1421 the constantinopolitan painter Angelos Apokaukos painted on its western wall the scene of the Last Judgment. After the fall of Candia to the Ottomans the building was divided by Zülfikar Ağa into small shops, which he rented to support his Camii. Today part of the northern barrel-vaulted aisle and a pointed arched door-frame can be seen inside the small shops between Kalokairinou and Michelidaki str. The southern aisle had disappeared already, before the visit of G. Gerola.
