The
church of St. Mathew is one of the few orthodox churches of the Venetian period
that survived. It is a single-aisled barrel-vaulted church dated by an
inscription in the year 1600. It is the eldest church in a complex of three,
built in different constructional phases. Above the western entrance a marble
plaque with the Evangelist Mathew on a throne is embedded. During the Venetian
period the church belonged to the union of the coopers. After the fall of
Candia to the Ottomans it was bought by the Great Dragoman of the Sultan
Panagiotakis Nikoussios and it was then devoted to the Monastery of Saint
Catherine of the Sinai. During the next century the church of St. Mathew was
the only Orthodox church in Candia.
