1.3.2 Saint Anastasia

The Venetian church known as St. Anastasia can probably be identified as the Orthodox Church already mentioned in a notary document of the year 1348. The building is preserved almost intact near the corner of Kalokairinou & Delimarkou str., half the way of the Venetian Ruga Panigra which led to the Gate of the Bastion Panigra (Pantokrator). Its ground-plan is awkward, with two parallel aisles bearing gothic features, such as pointed arched windows and buttresses, and an oblique transept to the East, which preserves a mihrab from the period that the church was turned into a mosque under the name of Sivri Çeşme Camii (mosque of the conical fountain). After the catastrophe in Minor Asia in 1922 and the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, the building was granted to a civilian and turned into a small industry, still active today.
